Jeremy Colangelo Does The Double on the Gulf Coast
Fifth Place Run at Mobile Highlights Weekend
One of the goals for Jeremy Colangelo in 2009 was to visit new racing venues and run some of the bigger events in the Super Late Model world.  This past weekend, Colangelo took on two new tracks, Five Flags Speedway (FL) and Mobile International Speedway (AL), in the opening rounds of the Gulf Cost Championship Series.  Despite having never raced each track, Colangelo was fast off the truck and came away with a lot of knowledge from the weekend.  He posted a disappointing 26th at Five Flags and a rejuvenating fifth place run at Mobile.
“I was really pleased when we were driving home after the weekend,” said Colangelo.  “We had a letdown on Friday, but that didn’t affect the way we ran on Saturday.  It was a good trip and we learned a lot for what we are going to do when we come back in a few weeks.”

Colangelo had an amazing run at Mobile on Saturday night as he thundered from a 17th starting spot to score a fifth place finish.  Colangelo’s car had trouble on new tires.  It took him several laps to get into rhythm with the leaders and with a tire stop during the race it was made things harder as he was back peddling for several laps after pit stops, but in the end he found his way to the front to log a top five finish.

“We were down on power early, but when the other drivers used up their tires we came alive,” said Colangelo. “We started almost last and the car handled really well and we held off Eddie Mercer for fifth.  It was a really good way to cap off our weekend.”

Five Flags was a different story, as a poor qualifying run left the team behind the eight ball before the race even got going.

“We had a good car in practice and we made the call to loosen the car up before qualifying,” said Colangelo.  “With the loose car I spun the tires in time trials and It was the just the beginning of the crazy night.  We started in the back and five laps into the race they all started wrecking in front of me and we got hit from behind and that ended our night.  It was a shame because we never got to see how good we were.”

Jeremy Colangelo will return to run the Gulf Coast Series again on May 22nd and 23rd. He will be back in action on Saturday, April 25th at New Smyrna Speedway (FL) for the Billie Harvey Memorial 100.
